Two men injured in an explosion and fire in a house in north Devon have been airlifted to hospital. The explosion in Trinity Street was so powerful that debris was found in a town square nearly 1,ft m away. The men underwent surgery at the hospital, which has a specialist burns and plastic surgery unit. Police said they deployed officers before any emergency calls came through because they heard the explosion from the town station. Police said Trinity Street was to remain closed throughout the night, but Litchdon Street and Higher Church Street had reopened and residents were able to return to their properties. He said: "The front of one building has been taken off, and the rear gardens of this property and others in Trinity Street are very badly affected.

A police officer was thrown under his vehicle and knocked unconscious while helping a broken-down driver. The pair were hit when a Citroen C4 crashed into the back of their vehicle, causing one of the officers to become trapped. Ch Supt Matt Lawler said he was "relieved" the officers "were not more seriously injured". They had been assisting a broken-down driver at the roadside for about 15 minutes when their vehicle was struck by a year-old female driver from Bideford. The force of the crash propelled the sergeant into the verge and the police constable beneath his vehicle.
